About
Existing studies have documented inconsistent associations between testosterone and muscle outcomes. Muscle mass and strength decline with age, with strength deterioration occurring threefold faster than mass loss (Goodpaster et al., 2006). Stratified and interaction analyses were conducted to determine whether the association between testosterone levels and ALMBMI were consistent across several subgroups (Figure 3). This association was maintained when the testosterone levels were transformed into quartiles. Additionally, they had a lower prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, liver disease, arthritis, and low muscle mass.
In terms of testosterone, levels exhibit an age-related decline, particularly in men, while women produce significantly lower amounts (Morley et al., 1997). Total serum testosterone levels were measured using isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) method. Besides helping with vitamin D production, getting outside can also help manage stress, which, as we’ll see in a second, is another important factor in hormone health. All those little "movement snacks" can keep your body running like a finely tuned machine, including the parts that manage hormones. When researchers at the University of Chicago restricted young men to five hours of sleep a night for one week, their testosterone levels fell 10-15%. Not everyone with low testosterone has symptoms (like low sex drive, fertility problems or erectile dysfunction). You may talk to your healthcare provider about a testosterone level test if you have symptoms of low testosterone.
For all these reasons, your healthcare provider will carefully consider if TRT is safe for you based on your unique characteristics. If you don’t have these health concerns, TRT is generally safe. This is why healthcare providers do extensive evaluations and tests before approving the use of TRT. Certain existing health conditions make TRT unsafe, like prostate cancer, breast cancer and heart failure.
Learn all about the sex hormone here, including its primary benefits. What's more, testosterone plays other important roles in health and disease that may surprise you. The presence of these ubiquitous steroids in a wide range of animals suggest that sex hormones have an ancient evolutionary history. They named the hormone testosterone, from the stems of testicle and sterol, and the suffix of ketone. A testicular action was linked to circulating blood fractions – now understood to be a family of androgenic hormones – in the early work on castration and testicular transplantation in fowl by Arnold Adolph Berthold (1803–1861). Testosterone's bioavailable concentration is commonly determined using the Vermeulen calculation or more precisely using the modified Vermeulen method, which considers the dimeric form of sex hormone-binding globulin.
For example, some studies suggest that TRT decreases your risk of heart attack over time, while others say it increases your risk. This includes monitoring your testosterone level and getting other blood tests to make sure TRT isn’t harming your health. As of 2025, it’s not yet approved for males who naturally experience a decline in testosterone as they age.
If you stop TRT, you’ll return to your normal level of testosterone. Your healthcare provider will recommend regular testing to make sure TRT isn’t hurting your health. It may take a few weeks before you start noticing differences in your body and mood once starting TRT. Your healthcare provider will work with you to figure out which option is best for you.
Are there any dietary supplements that can boost testosterone? However, for sustained increases, consistent exercise over several weeks or months is typically required. What types of exercise are most effective for boosting testosterone? Consulting with a healthcare professional or certified personal trainer is recommended to develop a personalized exercise plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. Exercise, particularly resistance training, places stress on the muscles and bones. The mechanisms by which physical activity influences testosterone production are complex and multifaceted. They decrease by an average of 1% to 2% each year after age 30, although they may stabilize in your 40s or beyond.
